Ahlström Estate in Pori's Noormarkku is a unique historic ironworks area where Finnish industrial, architectural and design history meet living experiences. The large, park-like area contains museums, exhibitions, architectural landmarks, restaurant services, accommodation and opportunities for a peaceful stay in the middle of nature. 

Ahlström Estate is not just a tourist attraction, but an entire area full of experiences where you can spend a moment or the whole day – or stay overnight and experience more.

Ahlström Estate is part of two official cultural heritage routes of the Council of Europe Alvar Aalto Route ja ERIHage, which is in Finland Industrial Heritage Route.

Cultural heritage work is valued

The magnificent ironworks area and Ahlström's long-term work to maintain it are appreciated, as Ahlström Estate is a nationally significant built cultural environment (RKY) according to the definition of the Finnish National Board of Antiquities.

A. Ahlström has been awarded the Satakunta Medal for his work in preserving and maintaining the culturally and historically valuable Ahlström Estate. The Finnish Society for Industrial Heritage, in turn, awarded A. Ahlström the Industrial Heritage Award for its work in turning the Makkarakoski sawmill into a museum and building the Ahlström Voyage exhibition.

Ahlström Estate is part of the ERIH network, representing Finnish industrial history in a unique way. ERIH – the European Route of Industrial Heritage, is a European tourism network that presents industrial heritage sites across Europe.

Celebrating its 175th anniversary, A. Ahlström has grown into a major international company with roots in the Ahlström Estate – a place of memory and continuity for the company and its family of owners.

Ahlström Estate in Pori, Noormarkku, is a central part of this long and significant story, where industry, architecture, design and cultural heritage intertwine into a unique whole.

Ahlström Voyage – a story of Finnish industry 

The Ahlström Voyage exhibition tells the remarkable story of the Ahlström company and family as part of Finland's industrialisation. The exhibition introduces you to glass design, industrial heritage, and the history of the ironworks area in an experiential way. 

Ahlström Estate is part of two official cultural heritage routes of the Council of Europe Alvar Aalto Route ja ERIHI (European Route of Industrial Heritage), which is in Finland Industrial Heritage Route.

The exhibition can be explored in 28 different languages ​​using a digital guide that can be downloaded using a QR code. 

Makkarakoski Sawmill Museum

The Makkarakoski Sawmill Museum takes visitors back to the origins of the sawmill industry and the industrial history of Ahlström Estate. The museum is located in the original sawmill building by the rapids and offers an interesting insight into the ironworks' everyday life in the past. 

Villa Mairea – Alvar and Aino Aalto's masterpiece

Alvar and Aino Aalto designed Villa Mairea in Ahlström Estate as a home for their friends Maire and Harry Gullichsen. The building was completed in August 1939. Harry Gullichsen was the CEO of A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö at the time, and Maire Gullichsen was a prominent art supporter and collector, whose international art collection is on display at Villa Mairea. 

Villa Mairea is home to the Villa Mairea Foundation, founded by Maire Gullichsen, whose mission is to present the building to the public, take care of the collections, and cherish the life's work and cultural heritage of Maire and Harry Gullichsen. Getting to know Villa Mairea only on guided tours, which reveal the building's architecture, history and its significance in Finnish and international architecture.

Noormarkun Club House is a high-class Chaîne des Rôtisseurs restaurant, where local ingredients, seasons and respect for tradition meet in a modern way. 

The club serves lunch every weekday and on Saturdays, a hearty game and fish table is set for lunch. In the evenings, it operates as an à la carte restaurant.
